INTERACTIVE SPACES - Using the Intangible as Material



NEW FORMS OF ART COMBINE TECHNOLOGY WITH THE PHYSICAL TO REDEFINE HUMAN ARTISTIC EXPERIENCE. DIGITAL POSSIBILITIES ALLOW FOR INVENTIVE FORMS OF INTERACTION TO EXPERIENCE ART AND SPACES. INTERACTIVE ART WORKS MANIPULATE THE MATERIAL AND INTANGIBLE WITHIN A DESIGNED SYSTEM TO CREATE A BALANCE BETWEEN PHYSICAL BEAUTY AND REVOLUTIONARY TRANSCENDENCE.


THE ART OF INTERACTIVITY LIES IN CONSTRUCTED MECHANISMS THAT RELY ON OUR SENTIENCE, EXISTING IN INFINITE STATES OF SUBJECTIVE RESPONSE AND FEEDBACK. THE WORK BECOMES EXPERIENCE-SPECIFIC, SPECIFIC TO THE VIEWER'S SENSATION, HIS PERCEPTION AND EFFECTED BEHAVIOUR. THE APPEAL OF EXPERIENCE IS IN ITS IMPERMANENCE - EACH ENCOUNTER IS EPHEMERAL, BUT THE WORK IS CONSTANTLY IN FLUX. THE CONSTRUCT OF EXPERIENCING ART IS REWIRED - WHILE THE VIEWER EXPERIENCES THE WORK, THE WORK CONCURRENTLY EXPERIENCES THE VIEWER. THE ART NO LONGER EXISTS AS A FIXED OUTCOME, BUT NOW LIES IN THE SYSTEM, BE IT SIMPLE OR INTRICATE, OF THE ARTIST'S DESIGNATION.


SENSORY EVOCATIONS BEYOND JUST THE VISUAL CAN FULFIL THE CRAVING FOR SOMETHING MORE IN ART, CREATING NEW DIMENSIONS OF PERCEPTION. THE FUNCTION OF INTERACTIVE ART EXTENDS FROM THE AESTHETIC TO THE EXPERIENTIAL BY INCORPORATING INTERACTION BETWEEN ITS STAKEHOLDERS OF THE WORK - THE MATERIAL, THE INTANGIBLE, THE SYSTEM AND THE AUDIENCE.

IN SPACE LIES A LEVEL OF EMBODIMENT THAT ELEVATES THE SENSES, ALLOWING FOR A DEEP ENGAGEMENT OF HUMAN PERCEPTION. WITHIN ANY SPACE, BE IT ENCLOSED OR OPEN, PHYSICAL AND INTANGIBLE ELEMENTS ARE IN PLAY, CONDITIONING THE SPATIAL EXPERIENCE. WHILE OUR SENSORY PERCEPTION IS SUBJECTIVE, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INANIMATE ELEMENTS WITHIN AND WITH SPACE ARE OBJECTIVE. ATTEMPTING TO UNDERSTAND THE CONSTRUCTS OF MATERIALITY (AND IMMATERIALITY), I ESTABLISH SYSTEMS THAT REVEAL AND MANIPULATE THE RAW INTERPLAYS BETWEEN PHYSICAL FORMS AND INTANGIBLE MEDIUMS (LIGHT, SHADOW, SOUND, TECHNOLOGY), WITH THE HUMAN BODY AND MOVEMENT AS TOOLS FOR INTERACTION. PLAYING WITH CAUSALITY OF HUMAN BEHAVIOUR ON CONDITIONS OF THE INTANGIBLE, THE WORKS AIM TO EXPOSE AND MATERIALISE THE QUALITIES OF THE NON-PHYSICAL THROUGH OUR SENSES.
